Welcome to your lockdown and working at home support.
We are delighted to be offering some assistance to you during these strange circumstances we find ourselves in. We may all be affected in a wide range of ways but one way to pull it all together is to say that for most people, any type of significant change:
at work, or
to a relationship, or
to our health;
or to the health of someone close to us
can feel stressful...and this pandemic may be triggering change on all of those fronts. So it's no wonder if you are finding being at home for long periods a little challenging. It's a cliche, but also a truth, to say that we are often 'creatures of habit'. When our habits are forced to change it can feel disorientating and unsettling. Even a simple habit of going to buy food has become potentially more dangerous, unusual and, therefore, a more anxious experience. We'll look at some ways of managing this uncertainty in later releases.
For now I'd like to introduce you to Nathan ...he's an important part of our team and our clients really enjoy the advice and knowledge he brings as a Double Olympian triple jumper and former captain of GB Athletics. Like many of you, he's Birmingham based and here's a quick hello from him with an explanation of what you can access today to help your wellbeing during this time. Nathan is also a sports scientist and a peak performance coach but above all else he's the same as the rest of us. He has had to deal with his own significant challenges such as the cancellation of this year's Olympics, the closing of his training facilities, the loss of the emotional and financial investment into his Olympic preparations and the loss of income from work being cancelled or postponed.

There's a few other short reads you may find helpful by way of introduction and to reflect upon:
1. Here's a few sentences on the fact we are social mammals and why that's important to acknowledge when our working environment changes....and a little more about the rest of our team and our experience (click here to read).
2. There are many places we could start when offering support to clients and we have chosen movement because it is the single most transformative thing you can do to benefit your brain right now....perhaps not what you are used to hearing but it puts you in control of you. This is very important during uncertainty and stress.....it creates a sense of structure, certainty and safety. So, if you are a person that doesn't like to exercise welcome to the club! That's most of us...so to help work on your mindset please click the link below to see why exercise is not just about looking good, losing weight, going to the gym.
The immediate mood and longer-term mental health benefits of movement
Try not to think about exercise...think about 'movement'...before our brains evolved to become the clever things they are they were an organ that helped us move. Movement is a critically important activity for brain health.
So, why not listen to Nathan...and if that's all you need to get moving at home then great. If you need a little more convincing click on the mood and mental health benefits of movement.
Either way, here's the link to the resources you need to move more at home.
We have broken it down into three categories for those with traditional gym equipment at home, those who may wish to use a highly flexible piece of equipment that costs peanuts to buy and for those that don't have or wish to use any equipment...there's even an exercise that doesn't involve getting off your bed! We have included a whole range of videos you can do in a room at home or outside...if you can exercise outside then the mood improvements are likely to be even better.
For those who enjoy their exercise but perhaps feel a little constrained by the lockdown there are some additional options you can try. Scroll down below the first three choices (gym, bands and home workout categories) and you will see you can watch a video of Nathan training and then an option to train with Ben, an elite skier. Skiers have to have great functional fitness with flexible, powerful lower bodies and excellent core strength and mobility. So we have built a series of exercises, with Nathan's help too (strong knees and hips), which offers you great variety to try. Good Luck....and remember to always warm up properly, check any home equipment carefully first before exercising and don't try anything that may aggravate a previous injury/underlying condition without checking with your GP or other health professional first.
