Self-Care

What is self-care?

Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, it’s something we very often overlook.

Self-care is all about making small and purposeful efforts. Self-care can be as simple as planning healthy meals instead of reaching for sugary snacks or making time to phone a friend or relative. Setting those intentions can provide more motivation and pleasure and cut back on stress and worry.

Here are some ideas on how to promote your own self-care:

  • create a “no” list - make a list of things you know you don’t like or you no longer want to do. Examples might include: Not checking emails at night, not attending gatherings you don’t like, not answering your phone during lunch/dinner.

  • make sure you use your annual leave - it is important that you take time away from work even if you are currently working in a different way.

  • promote a nutritious meal plan - maintaining a healthy diet is important for your overall health. You can refer to the previous ‘Nutrition’ page for some quick healthy snack recipes.

  • get enough sleep - adults usually need 7-8 hours of sleep each night. You can refer to the previous ‘Sleep’ page for more hints and tips on how to improve your sleep.

  • exercise - in contrast to what many people think, exercise is as good for our emotional health as it is for our physical health. It increases serotonin levels, leading to improved mood and energy. In line with the self-care conditions, what’s important is that you choose a form of exercise that you like!

  • use relaxation exercises and/or practice meditation - you can do these exercises at any time of the day. Click the here to view and download two of our relaxation techniques.

  • do at least one relaxing activity every day - whether it’s taking a walk or spending 30 minutes unwinding.

  • do at least one pleasurable activity every day - from watching the series you’ve been meaning to watch on Netflix or making a video call to a friend or family member.

  • look for opportunities to laugh! - whether it’s watching your favourite comedy or simply finding the funnier side to everyday life.
