Hydration "The facts"
2% dehydrated = 20% reduction in cognitive function affecting concentration.
95% of the time when you are foggy or unclear it is due to lack of water
Statistics show that simple solutions can bring very positive effects
Tired, hard to concentrate - drink more water
Hung over - drink more water
Toxic, stressed - you guessed it - drink more water.
Dehydration is the main trigger causing fatigue, nausea, headaches, lethargy and constipation.
In fact if you start to make sure you drink enough water you’ll benefit greatly.
Thirst is a poor mechanism - Don’t wait until you are thirsty!
Daily Hydration
Basic requirement is 25ml/kg each day (2 litres for a 80 kg man)
Have a fluid strategy such as taking a 500ml bottle of water to work, kept on the desk and refill 3 to 4 times by the time you leave. This is also good to ensure you get up regularly from your desk to help keep your circulation, lymphatic system and joints moving.
Bear in mind that much more water is needed during and before/after exercise routines and in hot conditions.
Hydration strategies
Get used to drinking plain water
Measure intake – work out how much you are drinking now and have a plan as to how you will get enough
Limit caffeinated drinks particularly after midday so as not to affect your sleep patterns (very common to have too many caffeinated hot drinks in the work place)
Explore other hot drink options - green teas
Avoid carbonated sodas
