Future leader Forum Resilience Resources

Please find two summary slides attached which capture the essence of the resilience model.

There is a focus on:

a need to understand resilience is more than mental strength...it is how the autonomic nervous system successfully adapts to help us improve our tolerance and capacity for future stress/challenges...it is a dynamic growth concept. It is not about coping, surviving, ploughing through or even bouncing back...it is about growth.

To successfully adapt the nervous system has evolved to:

  • give us the energy we need to win, compete, run, fight etc.

  • restore that energy ready for tomorrow

  • heal our mental and emotional injuries while at rest/sleep

  • encourage social engagement (collaboration) as a successful strategy for survival

The latter is called co-regulation. Self-regulation is what you do consciously (e.g. yoga, exercise, power nap etc.) to manage your 'state'. Co-regulation is often more unconscious and it is, at its simplest level, another person's nervous system making you feel safe or uneasy. Probably the most important gift you can give to others, be it your partners, children or team is your own well-regulated nervous system. This allows them to feel safe. When we feel safe it is easier to be bold, open, trusting, adventurous etc. - all essential to great teams. Modern lifestyles and determined, ambitious work behaviours need to be managed with great care to sustain the integrity of how the nervous system adapts.

To put it simply if you don't respect the neurophysiological underpinnings of your mental strength you become more prone to illness and burn-out: think of it as high performance traps and it becomes easier to anticipate and manage those periods when they happen.

Please click the button below for a summary explanation of the social engagement system and the evolution of the autonomic nervous system. It is a topic which can offer you a significant advantage as a future leader.

best wishes
